When children come to our partner organisations, they are often traumatised. The trauma could be a result of sexual abuse/harassment, emotional and spiritual isolation, extreme poverty, neglect or abandonment. They could be victims of natural calamities like the Tsunami. They could have physical/mental disabilities resulting in low self-esteem; or they might carry a heavy burden of shame. They are often wary of trusting others after feelings of betrayal by those they trusted or loved.
This is where the mental health program becomes critical through the use of well-qualified professionals who work to restore the sense of trust and confidence these children. It enables the children to both believe in themselves and, most importantly, in others.
