Children's Home of Hope (CHOH), is first place Nilima Sabharwal visited, and the first project adopted by Home of Hope, in 1999. It is located in the southern city of Chennai, and at that time, CHOH was experiencing a rampant outbreak of gastroenteritis due to poor hygiene and unsanitary conditions. With the timely intervention from Home of Hope, Inc., the debilitating disease was eradicated within a short period of time.
HOH Inc. has made its presence felt in the non-medical realms of CHOH as well. Currently, CHOH provides more than 100 children with food, clothing, and education largely due to contributions from HOH. Providing the basic necessities for orphaned and abandoned children in an atmosphere of loving care and discipline teaches the children to trust, have confidence in themselves and move forward. One of the students, Shashima, was a polio victim and came here as an abandoned orphan when still a child. She has returned once more, as a Kindergarten teacher, while going to school for her degree, and the children love her!
Currently, there is a lot of growth taking place in the south of India, and Chennai is among the most aggressive. Roads are being widened to allow more traffic, and the Indian Government has cut into the property of CHOH to the point where this year, part of the building itself will be removed! Temporary housing is being offered by a kind man in the city, a completely new building is needed. Architectural Plans have been approved, and soon to be is an 18,000 square foot school. Bedrooms will no longer be turned into classrooms during the day, the Computer Lab will be upgraded, and bathrooms and toilet facilities will be located on both floors! $500,000 are needed for the building alone, and a new program called, 'Bricks of Love, for a Homeless Child' has begun. The name of the donator, and the dollars raised by that person will be on each brick.
