The BCG School for the Deaf began in 1947. It was established by Mr. Jagadish Chandra Bhattacharya in Banaras, in the Varanasi County of India. In 2007 the school won the Uttar Pradesh State Government Award for the Most Outstanding Institute for working with people with disabilities.
BCG has been associated with Home of Hope since early that same year, and currently located in a three-story building with 22 rooms. The school has an academic program which follows the mainstream CBSE syllabus, and the curriculum is adopted to meet the special needs of the hearing impaired students.
To assure early detection and intervention for children with this handicap, an Awareness Campaign was started. By creating a training program that focuses on mothers and family care givers, this will provide the children with a head-start on moving forward with their lives and teaching them a sense of independence. The idea is to work with medical doctors, as well, to encourage early diagnosis. To provide easy access for the children, a school mini-bus will be purchased, as well.
Though Home of Hope does not currently fund any programs at the BCG School, we are proud to have been a part of their development.
