What began in 1988 at the New Delhi Railway Station, the Salaam Baalak Trust began working with 25 street children, and has since touched the lives of over 3,500. Currently, there are five locations, and one in particular helps the computer become a path to success.
It is called Apna Ghar Center, and helps boys between the ages of 12 and 17. This opened in 2007, with the help of Home of Hope, and has become a location for those interested in pursuing a higher education with a focus on computer training. Currently, there are over 60 young boys here, and they are showing self-confidence and positive progress with a belief in their future. An example would be Sanjay Kamur, who has been living with Salaam Baalak Trust, since a very young boy. When both of his parents passed away, he was taken care of by his grandmother, and it was 13 years ago that a Salaam Baalak Trust social worker found him on the streets, near the New Delhi Train Station.
Being offered the opportunity to go to school helped Sanjay open his mind and his heart to opportunities awaiting him. Anything Internetwork-related has caught his attention, and is developing these skills to assure he finds a job in this field. He works with programs used worldwide to position and promote his dreams, and expand his network of clients and promoters.
He knows that ahead of him is an opportunity, and what he wants most is the opportunity to follow his heart and become a professional photographer. Now, he knows what is required, and he is looking forward to being an apprentice to gain more knowledge and live experiences, and is studying at the Delhi University to finish the first required step, and receive his Bachelor of Arts diploma.
Protecting these children is the primary goal. Salaam Baalak Trust works towards protecting the rights, and responsibility of the community, of each child to education, health and safety. There are special classes to teach them skills that will help them become independent that include art courses to express themselves and attendance is carefully watched. Without this sense of self-motivation, their chances of success are further reduced.
