Ending a cycle of early marriage, childbearing, (and associated problems of high infant/childhood mortality, multiple children, subjugation of women, possible ill-treatment, dependence) and poverty is not an easy goal to accomplish. Nonetheless, that is exactly what a small village project of Mijwan Welfare Society started by Kaifi Azmi and supported by Home of Hope has set out to do. Several families have witnessed their young married girls become an asset as opposed to a burden and liability. Project coordinator, Nalini Bhat, who has been involved with this project for a few years, recently visited the project and commented “It is so encouraging to witness the transformation in these girls – they blossom from shy, withdrawn girls lacking in confidence, to ones who feel they can actually contribute to their families’ well-being. They feel they have some control over their future, and don’t have to remain victims of social norms and expectations”.

Success Stories:
So far 3 batches(60 girls each) have been trained. Some of the graduates are already working for an organization called "SEVA". Two graduates want to join as teachers at the society. Over a dozen girls, including one who is handicapped, want to start their own business or school to spread awareness to other village girls. Stipends were considered a necessity in the early days of this project, as a motivation to the girls’ families to allow attendance. However, now many girls consider it a privilege to be a part of this program, and stipends are being reduced. Nalini Bhat is greatly encouraged by HOH’s involvement in this project, “A whole new world has opened up for these girls!”
