As Home of Hope enters its second decade of existence, there is a sense of excitement about what the future holds. The goal is to achieve "total quality control" with specific measures in place for all program areas:
- Mental Health Program started 9 years ago with Udayan Care (Delhi). According to Dr. Vikram Dutt, Program Director and Liaison for HOH projects, "This is now a flagship program. When HOH started funding this program, mental health was unknown in child welfare programs in India. We can be proud that today, as per the Juvenile Justice Act (amended in 2006), the law requires to have a Mental Health Program in every institution that cares for a child".
- Computer Education has been implemented in various HOH-supported projects. NBC featured Atmashree as a success story in its Bay to Bangalore series and brought HOH's work to positive public light in the US.
- Nutrition Program which started in a modest manner in Manovikas (Delhi) will require closer attention in other project locations, with the goal of ensuring that all HOH children receive healthy, balanced meals.
- Education has been a consistent goal for the children of HOH, with good results. It will remain a target for improvement in the years ahead.
- Personal Security and Sleeping arrangements are areas that HOH has not received specific attention. Future focus will aim ensure that every child has their 'OWN SPACE.'
- Leisure - HOH kids should have ample opportunities for development through leisure activities.
SUCCESS STORIES
Manovikas has some amazing success stories -12 graduates of their program are working in different private companies.
One is Ajay; when his parents bought him to MV, they had given up hope. Today Ajay is an assistant coach for the special Olympics, earning a very respectable salary.
Saurav could barely speak, but thanks to the speech therapy program, he learnt singing! Today he is involved in a business and his self-confidence continues to increase.
Manu's father had brought him to MV thinking he was a lost cause. However, MV recognized his love for computers and encouraged it. He can now sit at a computer for hours doing data entry flawlessly, with amazing concentration.
Dr. Sabharwal noted "That's what I love about Manovikas - they believe in the potential inside these children. Like HOH, they don't give up."
