Pingalwara Society, Amritsar
"Impressive, through and through" is what Harinder Kohli, newly appointed Project Coordinator for Pingalwara, thought of his project visit. Mr. Kohli recently returned from Amritsar, Punjab and was amazed at how "well adjusted, well dressed and happy" the 500 socially, physically/mentally, economically challenged children of Pingalwara appeared. "They were so regular - with a genuine sense of security and well-being", he expressed. He witnessed the "beautifully maintained, well organized, effectively managed" facilities of the Manawala Complex for the first time, where Pingalwara's 4 schools for the underprivileged children are located, including two for those with special needs - the mentally challenged and the hearing impaired.
Founded by Mr. Bharat Puran Singh, the Pingalwara Society continues to empower the underprivileged segments of the community of Pingalwara and other cities. Ms. Inderjit Kaur who has dedicated her life to serving others, now heads the Society. In addition to serving the needs of children, the Society is also focused heavily on ecological and environmental issues. As an example, the Society distributes large quantities of plants and saplings, which are cultivated by students as part of their ecology curriculum to nearby communities.
The School for the Hearing Impaired (for approximately 25 children) and the Computer Lab, which serves almost 400 children, are supported through HOH funds. "Pingalwara seems to be one those charitable projects that gives you the feeling that your donations are being utilized with maximum efficiency", said Mr. Kohli.
This year, HOH will fund salaries for 4 full time teachers, including 1 computer teacher, and equipment including field amplification systems, group hearing aid system, computer software for the hearing impaired, 4 desktop computers and one laptop, a T.V. and a D.V.D player. Many of the hearing impaired children have made great strides in developing communication skills by participating in the speech therapy programs. According to Mr. Kohli, much of the credit for this goes to x-army officers R.P. Singh and Col. D.S. Bawa who help run this school, exemplifying a genuine passion and knowledge about their work, and the absolute devotion of their 3 teachers, two of who are hearing impaired.
