Home of Hope has not forgotten that the tragedy of the tsunami continues to linger for the many children who became displaced and orphaned through the annihilating waves of the 2004 tsunami. The Board has voted to fund $5,000 for the education of approximately 70 orphan children in Karaikal (South India). Dr. Yogum, a well respected physician at Alta Bates Hospital, with a service oriented approach to life, will serve as a project coordinator for this project. Anil Lal, VP and Treasurer of HOH says “Whenever I stop to think about the innocent children who have lost their parents, I can't help but cry. Through Home of Hope I will be able to touch a few of these special children. I just want to relight the candle of hope that was blown out”.

The children are presently being housed in makeshift accommodations until a purpose built facility becomes available in the next several months.

Puttaveeramma, Mysore
Puttaveeramma Education and Charitable Trust was established in 1989 by a loving 87 year old lady who has devoted most of her life to helping children, and serves approximately 85 resident deaf and dumb girls in the Mysore area. The project also operates a school for these girls.

According to Dr. Sabharwal, “PVM has come a long, long way. Due to this increased sanitation and improved nutrition there has not been a sick child for a long while, resulting in reduced medical bills. HOH should feel like a PROUD MOM... The children all look so BRIGHT and HEALTHY with shining faces. The ENERGY of the Ashram has changed.”

Home of Hope's started funding in 2001 to help purchase rice, group hearing aids, clothing for 85 children, a food processor grinder, and medical services.. HOH has also funded a computer lab and refrigerator for this organization. Dr. Sabharwal was given a tour of the computer lab recently and she observed, “This is their pride and joy. The kids just LOVE it and can’t seem to get enough of it. There are about 6 girls in the 10 grade who have become very computer savvy. The amazing thing is they follow instructions by a simple lip movement. They are teaching themselves by going into Google and getting information...very, very impressive”

The girls of Puttaveeramma won their first National Award in a dance competition. They are able to perform in great UNISON without even hearing the music!

Future Vision
The PVM ultimate dream was to train these girls to sew leaves together, creating the PATTALS , used in marriages. There is a large market for this and the girls could make a small earning. However with the large outsourcing of jobs there has been an employment boom in Mysore. With improved funding, these PVM girls can be trained for marketing jobs. There earning power could change dramatically from $0.50 per day for relatively simple, uneducated earning power and 5,000 Rs per month for educated, trained workers.According to Dr. Sabharwal “This will be the ULTIMATE fruit of our efforts...to see these girls self sufficient”.

Home of Hope needs your help to build adequate classroom facilities (classes continue to held on the roof in a hot, makeshift tin shed) and to hire professional training staff.

Celebrate For HOH:
The trend to share your gifts and blessings with those in need is catching on! HOH would like to give a big “Thank You!” to Sunil Dhawan for giving so generously to the kids of HOH. His surprise birthday party raised $753 for HOH! Dr. Sabharwal says “This very sweet gesture is also very uplifting and inspiring.....it shows that the community really RESPECTS the work that we are doing”.
