Nalini Bhat Change is in the air for HOH – not just the US political scene. Dr. Nalini Bhat is no stranger to most of you who have been involved with HOH. Her commitment to the children of HOH has catapulted her to the position of President of HOH, succeeding Shilpi Minocha.

Nalini says she is honored to work for such a “dynamic organization which has risen from its meager beginnings of supporting just one orphanage, to positively impacting the lives of over 2,000 children and young adults. For an organization with nearly zero administrative expenses, this is no small achievement”.

Despite the past accomplishments, Dr. Bhat recognizes there are many challenges that HOH faces, “Though we have much to be proud of, the truth is that we have only scratched the surface. There is so much more that we must do to help our kids succeed. On the fundraising front, the poor economic climate will certainly have an impact on our fundraising abilities. However with our low cost model and with support from our generous donors, I am sure that we will be able to meet budget targets”. Her goals as President include promoting “consensus among board members and seeking “program enhancements which will help quantify program results. I feel that we must hold our program partners accountable for program results.” HOH wishes you all the best!

Anil Lal visits Salaam Baalak Trust, New Delhi
Parvin Nair, Salaam Balak It is always exciting to see how HOH’s money is being put to work to change lives. Anil Lal, past Treasurer of HOH recently visited Salaam Baalak Trust. This residential center serves children and young men who have been rescued from a dismal life on the streets and railway platforms in Delhi. As a requirement of SBT, all kids attend an alternative school program called “Open School”. On successful completion of this program and an exit test they receive the equivalent of a General Education Diploma. As an additional prerequisite to gain access to our advanced computer lab, each student must successfully complete a program of study in basic computer literacy.

Anil Lal wrote “The center is located on a main traffic road which cuts through the heart of Delhi’s Paharganj district. Walking down the road was no new experience for me. After the India / Pakistan partition in 1947 my family came to Delhi and settled into a small dilapidated building on the ground floor. What a small world we live in.

At the center Parveen Nair, founder of Salaam Baalak and Mira Nair’s mother, greeted Vikram Dutt (HOH program director), and myself. We were both pleasantly surprised by the very grand looking center. Though accommodations are very scarce and rents are rather expensive, they managed to carve out enough space to sufficiently accommodate 10 independent workstations and one instructors unit comfortably. This center was designed to create an environment where our kids can learn skills, which will help them to gain fruitful employment in mainstream jobs. The excitement could clearly be seen on the faces of the first batch of selected kids.

In the near future we hope to be able to share with you some exciting projects that our kids will be working on.” Certainly a great thing to look forward to!

Farewell From Shilpi Minocha
In her own words: “It has been a pleasure to lead a fantastic team of Home of Hope Board of Directors and Committee members for the year 2007 and 2008. During this time we were able to achieve many milestones, including a million dollar mark for fundraising and establishing TQM (total quality control measurement) goals for our projects in India. I wish HOH the very best in its future endeavors under the new leadership of Nalini Bhat, while I continue to serve on the Board as a member.” HOH thanks Shilpi Minocha for her tireless work in the lives of its children.
