Nilima Returns from India - Highlights of Visit (Part 1)
There is nothing like seeing lives change before your very eyes, and that is exactly what happens each time Dr. Nilima Sabharwal makes her annual visit to projects supported by Home of Hope. For all who need evidence of the impact made by their donations, just consider the changed lives of the children at various locations.
Mumbai - SUPPORT
Most of the children at this project are orphans, whose relatives abused them physically, mentally and/or sexually. They would eat from garbage cans near dhabas (food houses), sleep on the street, beg for food, get robbed, beaten by the police, raped by random men and given "nasha" (to get high). When Sonia and Shiv (Dr. Sabharwal's children accompanied her on this visit) asked a 10 year old girl, "What did you do if you felt cold?" Her answer was "I just curled into a little ball because I had no sheet".
Their rescue by Support has given them a new lease on life, a hope for an otherwise condemned future. At present there are 38 girls, of which 17 are going to school. Four are learning tailoring and six are in peer education. All these girls are now very motivated "to become something in life". There are six girls suffering from AIDS and TB who spend their time gardening and receiving treatment.
Karaikal Orphanage for Tsunami victims
With most of the physical damage from the Tsunami cleared up, the job of rebuilding lives continues to loom large. This orphanage, among the newest of HOH projects, has become home to 100 orphans. Most of them used to have nightmares and scream in their sleep. With the passage of time and being in a safe haven where compassion abounds, they have become calmer and appeared to be happy according to Dr. Sabharwal. "As soon as I entered the small 2 bedroom home there was a TSUNAMI, I experienced a FLOOD of love that just poured from these children to welcome me. They were hugging me, kissing me, touching my feet." Gratitude abounds for the enabling support of HOH!
