A Worthwhile Journey - Dr. Sabharwal Visits the Projects Part 1 :
As is her custom at the start of each New Year, Dr. Sabharwal is on a whirlwind visit to all of HOH's projects and is excited to report the wonderful developments, and inevitably, some setbacks that she witnessed first hand. Her trips always provide useful insights in an ongoing effort to ascertain the areas where HOH should be directing its support in this year ahead.
Chennai's Home of Hope (CHH)
At the birth place HOH (USA) every thing seemed to be under control and full of promise. Dr. Sabharwal reported an inspiring success story. Suresh, one of the earliest orphans taken on by this orphanage, is now employed by a local company and making a decent living. Having tragically lost his pregnant wife in an accident recently, Suresh has committed to start a new orphanage for boys, totally independent of CHH. He is partially funding this project with his own money and has raised some funds in addition. He hopes to provide for 5 orphans initially.
Other "graduates" of this orphanage have also returned to CHH as teachers and counselors. Shashima is an orphan girl and a polio victim who now works at CHH as a teacher while studying BCOM (degree in commerce).
Karaikal - All smiles for Tsunami kids
A 6-hour ride from CHH brought Dr. Sabharwal to her next destination, the quaint and charming village of Karaikal, and now home to HOH's orphanage with approximately 60 children. After enjoying an exotic South Indian meal on a banana leaf, Dr. Sabharwal was greeted by a "tsunami of love" from these children who were learning to overcome the trauma that they had undergone in their very recent past.
Thanks to the donations they have received, these children have now moved to a decent home, after enduring cramped conditions in two rooms for almost a year. They are well taken care of by a devoted set of staff and caregivers. The children were appreciative of the second hand computer they had been given and showed a great eagerness to learn.
