HOH President, Dr. Nilima Sabharwal left for India on January 29 to visit all the projects sponsored by Home of Hope in keeping with the hands on approach. Her four-week visit will take her to Delhi, Amritsar, Mijwan Goa, Chennai, Mysore, Bangalore and Mumbai. This newsletter and those to come, will reflect what she has observed with her own eyes to prove that the HOH dollars donated by you are "making a difference….one child at a time". Consider these changed lives at one of the Delhi projects, Manovikas.

Dr. Sabharwal observed the speech therapist at work with a young girl who could not speak six months ago. Today she is able to make sounds. The therapist was working with her tongue and jaw movements. The girl's movements and sounds get translated into a visual picture on the computer screen which shows a girl trying to enter a home. If she makes the right sounds/pitch the girl on the computer screen can enter the house, if not, she tries again. With greater improvement in pitch and sound, the girl on the computer is able to do tasks that are more complicated. Technology at work!

During last year's visit, Dr. Sabharwal connected with Saurav, who had made painful efforts to communicate with her, without much success. On this trip, Dr. Sabharwal was moved to tears as she saw the change one year of therapy had made in Saurav's life. He sang an entire song for her!

Gagan, a child suffering from hyperactivity was able to sit and listen to Dr. Sabharwal and follow her instructions to complete little tasks.

Manoj, a special young adult recently lost both his parents. He subsequently suffered great cruelty at the hands of his brother because of inheritance left to him by his parents. The brother would tie him up in chains (the marks were still visible to Dr.Sabharwal) and plans were put into place to leave him on a train to die or be lost forever. Manoj's sister reported this to Manovikas which intervened, and rescued Manoj. His needs are finally being attended to!

Kids Raise Funds for HOH:

It has been gratifying to see the younger generation get passionate about HOH and taking up the cause for children in need. Nandini Nallasivan, Sophie Gill and Nina Sawhney have each developed their own unique fundraising methods to use at their schools to get other children to support the cause of HOH. Their efforts have paid off handsomely!
