The annual fundraising event and banquet for Home of Hope (HOH) was held on Saturday, November 8, at the Chandni Restaurant in Newark, California. Movie star and social activist Shabana Azmi lent an aura of glamour as chief guest this year. This fundraising dinner and social event, which raised more than $150,000, was held in a formal yet non-ostentatious setting. It was attended by close to 600 people who have chosen to make a difference in the lives of organizations serving underprivileged children.

This annual event has picked up prominence over the years and has now enlisted the support of many prominent public figures to advertise and support the cause. Erstwhile mayor of San Jose, Ron Gonzales, was in attendance, along with Ms. Sushmita Thomas, the Consul General of San Francisco. Scott Budman and Don Hardy were the dynamic duo representing NBC television. Scott Budman has been a featured guest in past years and made an exuberant appearance on stage and related his views on how Silicon Valley is making a difference half a world away. Local teachers who have made a difference in the lives of the HOH children through their volunteering spirit were also an integral part of the evening's success. The event was a mix of social mingling and casual entertainment with a buffet dinner as an added attraction. The highlights of the evening were the videos chronicling the testimonials from organizations that have been beneficiaries of HOH funding- the hearing-impaired children of Pingalwara who have found a new medium of communication through modern technology, the young mothers and girls of Mijwa village who have earned much-needed independence through HOH sponsored entrepreneurship, and so many other organizations that have witnessed the dramatic impact of the funds raised by the board and committee members of HOH. The excitement in the eyes and faces of the attendees was apparent as they used the event to catch up with each other and watch the video updates on the changes that they have been able to bring.

High School students from area schools played an important and admirable role. As participants in an evening with a charitable goal, these smartly dressed young students assisted ably with entertaining, guiding, ushering, and collecting pledges. Their enthusiasm and energy for non-academic socially important causes made the attendees proud. Vijay Singh regaled the audience with his hilarious stand up comedy and brought back memories of yesteryear with his mimicry of movie stars.

The event highlighted that there is much to be proud of but made it apparent at the same time that there is much more to accomplish. Without overtly highlighting the need for added support, this HOH event enabled the attendees to relax in a social setting and gave them an opportunity to witness the amazing difference they are collectively making in the lives of the underprivileged members of society.
