In all ways the 2nd Annual Home of Hope Walkathon held on Sunday July 24th, 2005 at 9 am was a great success! Over $20,000 was raised through the dedication of walkers and the generosity of their sponsors. The walkathon attracted 70 walkers including girl scouts, high-schoolers and adults, with a significant contingent from Sun Microsystems. Although the walkathon is still in its infancy, the support it generated confirms that it will continue to grow and multiply in the years ahead.
One young walker, Navneet Grover was inspirational in her devotion to the cause of Home of Hope and the 1,200 orphaned, abandoned and/or physically/mentally challenged children it supports throughout India. Having saved $500 for a trip to Hawaii, she decided to divert the use of this money to fly out to California to participate in the walkathon, and raised over $3,000 from her friends and family. The Girl Scouts participated in the walkathon for the first time and collected over $2,000 to help HOH children across the continents.
Many first time participants were pleasantly surprised by the "royal treatment" they received during the walk. Food and drink donations from the many well wishers of HOH ensured that all walkers left Hellyer Park in San Jose well fed and tended to! Freshly prepared tandoori chicken, hot dogs, chips, fruit and drinks satisfied every palate under clear blue skies and shady trees by the cool lakeside waters.
One teenager, Sanam Bhatia quipped with satisfaction as she was leaving the park "So this is what I woke up for!" Indeed, sacrificing the only morning of the week when she could lie in - with her grueling schedule of weekday activities during the summer, seemed well worth it!
Home of Hope would like to invite everyone to the next great event - the Annual Dinner Fundraiser which promises to offer great entertainment and food. Mark your calendars - Saturday, November 12th 2005, to support this wonderful cause.
