Home of Hope's 3rd Annual Walkathon raised over $26,000 with more money still trickling in to benefit the 1,500 children under the umbrella of its care. Held on Saturday, August 20th 2006 at the Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont for the first time, walkers could enjoy many scenic pleasures at this 3.5 mile-long loop trail offering beautiful marsh and bay views. Sabeer Bhatia, founder of Hotmail put his walking shoes for this great cause and was a welcome addition to the growing family of HOH supporters. Rekha Gupta, the primary organizer for the walk enthused, "We are so impressed by the generosity of our supporters - we had two donations of $5,000 each and many others gave beyond our expectations. Our walkers worked hard to solicit sponsors and were rewarded handsomely to help the children of Home of Hope". The morning started cool and pleasant for the walkers with temperatures warming up as the event was rounding up. As always, the walkers were given ample opportunity to replenish lost calories by indulging in an array of food - potato somosas, Togo sandwiches, fruits and tandoori chicken. The walkers were as varied in their ages and backgrounds as the food. One could have engaged in a conversation about Hindu philosophy with Kip (make that Kipacharia after Indianization) who conveyed a deep fondness for India and its culture having lived and worked there, or discussed the art of raising teenagers with author ("Raising Yourself - Making the Right Decisions endorsed by Dr. Laura), inspirational and motivational speaker, Sumant Pendharkar.
