Isaac Husain project coordinator recently visited this project in Mysore – an orphanage for 35 poor, mentally/physically challenged children between the ages of 3-16. It was his first visit to Chayadevi and he was impressed by what he saw. The following is his account of his visit:

Over the last two years, Home of Hope has actively funded new capital projects to improve the living conditions, education and future growth for the orphanage. On my visit, I was able to see the tremendous progress that these initiatives have made in the children’s lives. Several students displayed newly acquired computer skills that were made possible through the provision of a computer lab and education program by Home of Hope.

I was also excited to visit the site of a new, larger orphanage capable of housing over 100 children. The current building is dilapidated and incapable of housing more than 35 children, making the need for a new orphanage critical to the continued well being of the children. Home of Hope is a key sponsor of the project, and after reviewing various diagrams and plans during my visit, I am confident that Chayadevi will succeed in its next phase of growth.

While charting the progress of Chayadevi was exciting, my greatest pleasure came through spending time with the children. When I gave them my digital camera to take pictures on their own, I was amazed at the joy it brought them. The children were so excited to take pictures (some very good!) and see the result immediately. I have since sent them that camera, and I look forward to receiving their photos in the near future!

Spending time with the kids and seeing with my own eyes the resilience, ambition, and warmth of the children was simply amazing. Our donors are the reason behind the 35 smiles that I will never forget. Upon leaving the orphanage, several children made me promise to visit again next year, which is why I am counting the days until my next visit in December!

Consider Chetan

Chetan, age 11, typifies the resilience that is characteristic in all of the children at Chayadevi. Orphaned and badly injured in a house-fire three years ago, he arrived at the orphanage emotionally and physically scarred. Today, his injuries, and more importantly, his confidence, have greatly improved. He told Isaac that he aspires to become a soldier!

According to the site manager, Hemanth, these children have become each others brothers and sisters, and this was apparent to Isaac as he observed how the children took care of Chetan, who has limited use of his right hand. Isaac says “It was heartwarming beyond words to see Chetan as an outgoing and happy child, and equally warming to see the other children’s interaction with him.”
