My Trip to Pingalwara
As I got off the train in amritsar. I was welcome by the most adorable site in the world. A tiny tot sardar boy within (barely 5 years old) wearing a flaming orange turban, was holding a hand made sign " WELCOME Dr. NILIMA SABHARWAL". Next to him was the cutest five year old little girl wearing a white bridal lace dress with a cutest white lace hat perched on her head. She was holding a bouquet of hand made paper flowers. Both these kids were perched on top of the platform bench. As I walked towards them I didn't know whether to laugh or cry! I don't believe there are words in any dictionary to describe my emotion! I greeted this welcome committee with my usual chatter and tried to chat with them. They just gazed at me with their limped beautiful eyes in silence. I was in for a SHOCK…….. they were both deaf and mute.
I was choked with emotion and tried not to cry. On the way to pingalwara they both sat next to me in the car and I watched them and tried fathom their silent world?? Both kids had animated expressions on their faces when they gazed out of the car window. They looked like excited regular kids. Then I saw them communicate…….. WITH THE SIGN LANGUAGE…….. THE GIFT FROM HOH TO PIGNALWARA. I felt so good know the sadness was gone from my heart. I felt like a proud mom watching their results of HOH taking fruit in these kids.
During the short journey, both the kids warmed upto me, communicating to me in sign language. They showed me the alphabets and taught how to say my name in sign language. I learnt from their teacher that these kids are very bright and LOVE THE COMPUTER COMPUTERS COMPUTERS EVERY WHERE .
