Sonia Sabharwal, Youth Leader: Sonia Sabharwal is considered to be the "unofficial" co-founder of Home of Hope, Inc. She was the first Youth Leader and was her mother's "right hand person" throughout the birth of the organization. During HOH's early years, she helped to arrange charity events, performed classical Indian dance at fundraisers, visited the orphanages annually, and raised funds through a high school club. She also wrote articles about the cause in local newspapers and recruited other youth to join. During her undergraduate years at Cornell University, she continued to be heavily involved and visited the orphanages annually. In medical school at UC San Diego, she has continued to spread the awareness of and raise funds for the cause by constructing power-point presentations, recruiting other youth, and helping with fundraisers. Her involvement in the mental health program at Udhayan Ghar in New Delhi has been a major inspiration in her choice of a specialty in Psychiatry.
Shiv Sabharwal, Youth Leader: I was just ten years old when Home of Hope began. I was the little errand boy at my mothers first fundraiser back in 1997. I would do the simplest things such as carrying supplies or blowing up balloons. Home of Hope has always sparked an awareness in me about how priveleged I am and how important it is to help those less fortunate. Even if not helping HOH directly, this cause has inspired me to minor things such as buying a cheeseburger for a homeless man outside of McDonalds or feeding people outside of the Samaritan House. In 2000, I went and visited Childrens Home of Hope in Chennai for the first time and was touched by how children who had nearly nothing were laughing and having a good time. I was also amazed at how powerful the dollar can go in India. With just two fundraisers, there was already a medical clinic in Childrens Home of Hope and the previously unsanitary bathrooms had been completely remodeled. The children now had a clean healthy environment to learn and thrive. Besides sparking an awareness, this cause has also helped me in my academic career. I really felt that I was just a mediocre student going in for the combined BS/MD interviews back in 2005. However, at every interview, I brought an HOH brochure and amazed every professor. Therefore, this cause has not only shaped my values but my future as well. Throughout the years, I have donated graduation parties to HOH and just this year back in December, I spread the HOH awareness at my medical school. We donated our Diwali show to HOH and I gave a short speech and showed an HOH video. This cause is an integral part of my life and I will continue to spread the awareness and be a mentor for members of the youth chapter.
